Sleep Cycle Calculator
Calculate the best bedtime and wake up times based on natural 90-minute sleep cycles. Minimize morning grogginess and sleep depth disruptions.

💡 Sleep tip: "Waking mid-cycle causes grogginess. Aim for a full cycle end."
How to Use the Sleep Cycle Calculator
Ensure you wake up feeling refreshed by planning your sleep cycles. Here is how to use the tool:
- Choose your mode using the tabs: I want to wake up at X or I want to sleep at X.
- Specify the target time using the time picker. (Or click *Use Current Time* to load the current system hour).
- Adjust the Time to Fall Asleep slider. Most people need about 15 minutes, but you can set it between 5 and 60 minutes.
- Click Calculate Optimal Times to view a grid of 6 suggested times. The target durations (5 and 6 cycles) are marked with stars to represent the recommended sleep range for adults.
How Sleep Cycle Tracking Works
During the night, your brain moves through structural stages of sleep. A full cycle takes roughly 90 minutes to complete, moving from light sleep to deep sleep, and ending with REM (dreaming) sleep.
Waking up during the deep sleep phase causes severe sleep inertia, which is the biological cause of grogginess. By aligning your alarm with the end of a sleep cycle (multiples of 90 minutes), you can wake up naturally and easily.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sleep cycle? ↓
A sleep cycle is a period of sleep lasting about 90 minutes, during which a person moves through stages of light, deep, and REM sleep. Waking at the end of a cycle leaves you feeling refreshed.
How long does it take the average person to fall asleep? ↓
It takes the average healthy adult about 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep once they get into bed. Our calculator assumes a standard sleep latency of 15 minutes.
Why do I feel tired even after 8 hours of sleep? ↓
Waking up in the middle of a deep sleep stage (mid-sleep cycle) causes sleep inertia, which leaves you feeling groggy and disoriented, even if you got a high total duration of sleep.
How many hours of sleep do adults need? ↓
Most healthy adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. This equates to roughly 5 to 6 full 90-minute sleep cycles.
Can adjusting my sleep schedule improve productivity? ↓
Yes, structuring sleep around complete 90-minute cycles helps optimize rest efficiency, minimizes grogginess, and supports mental focus and morning productivity.
